GIK Acoustics Demo Room in Atlanta

Alpha Series Acoustic Panels absorber diffusors by GIK Acoustics in Demo Room

Welcome to the GIK Acoustics demo room.

A question we frequently hear from customers is “How will acoustic treatments improve my room?” With the GIK Demo Room, that question is easily answered and clients get a first-hand opportunity to experience the difference as Hearing is Believing!

Located in our North American headquarters in Atlanta, GA, the Demo Room is designed to give clients a superior sonic experience in a fully treated space.

We started with an average size room and a relatively modest sound system consisting of studio monitors (PMC twotwo.8) and an audiophile preamp (Odyssey Audio Candela). With this simple setup clients can experience how room treatments transform the sound. So whether you have a home studio, professional recording studio, 2-channel listening room, or home theater, we are able to clearly demonstrate the impact of proper treatments.

ROOM TREATMENTS

First Reflection Points

Sound absorbing treatments are applied to the first reflection points resulting in the listener hearing the direct sound coming from the monitors. See our video on the damage caused by and how to treat First Reflection Points. In the Demo Room, we used:

Front Wall and Rear Sidewalls

The area behind first reflection points (Rear Sidewalls) are where rooms experience flutter echo issues. The choice of absorption or diffusion really depends on the purpose of the room and what sound you’re going for; but here we used a product that combines absorption and diffusion:

Glenn Kuras and Grammy Award Winning producer Needlz

Placing panels on the Front Wall helps with what is known as Speaker Boundary Interference Response, or SBIR, which is the interference you hear when omnidirectional low frequency waves come from the back of the speaker. Please click here to see our full article on SBIR.

  • (1) custom ArtPanel featuring Florian Süssmayr art – front wall
  • (4) 23.75″ x 23.75″ 4A Alpha Panel in standard black – flanking ArtPanel on front wall

Back Wall

The Back Wall is a source for a lot of nulls & peaks not just in low end, but throughout whole frequency range. We chose to diffuse the sound waves coming off the back wall:

Corners

Low frequency sound waves are omnidirectional and are also much longer and much stronger than higher frequency waves. That’s why many rooms have low frequency issues and why bass trapping is so important. All low end modes end in corners, which makes the ideal place for absorption.

  • (2) Soffit Bass Traps in standard black – freestanding in back corners

CONCLUSION

The result is a room that sonically soars. Bass sounds super tight with an even frequency response across the whole spectrum. By employing products from the Alpha Wood Series which absorb and diffuse, we get a broader coverage pattern in the upper frequencies making the vocals & guitar more transparent. This improves the imaging and the sound stage is improved. Simply by applying proper room treatments, the integrity of the speakers – and the room – is maximized.
